A paper has recently been published that presents a formula to estimate the percentage of health-pertinent ash in a sieved sample. Currently one can only really accurately sieve to 63 um but finding out if volcanic ash is respirable (< 4 um) is critical for health hazard assessment. The formula allows rapid assessment using very basic equipment. The paper can be seen at
During the highly successful Joint conference of Merapi International
Workshop and Volcano International Gathering 2006, in Yogyakarta, 3 to
9 September 2006, the Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Geological
Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM) convened an informal cooperation meeting with
international project partners. This meeting was attended by
researchers and officials from the USA, France, Belgium, Germany,
Australia and Italy. The meeting discussed developing a stronger
framework for international cooperation, and the state of the various
international projects within Indonesia. WOVO warmly endorses CVGHM's
initiative and is happy to publicise similar initiatives around the
